How to choose the right pool pump

1. Single-speed vs variable-speed

This is the most important decision you'll make. Single-speed pumps run at one fixed RPM — typically 3,450 RPM — all day, every day. Variable-speed pumps let you dial down to 1,000–2,000 RPM for daily filtration and ramp up only when needed (for vacuuming, water features, or heating).

2. How much horsepower do you need?

More HP is not always better. Oversized pumps push water too fast through your filter, reducing filtration efficiency and increasing wear. The right size depends on your pool volume and plumbing.

• Up to 15,000 gallons: 1 HP is usually sufficient
• 15,000–25,000 gallons: 1.5 HP is the standard choice
